Bacolod-Silay Airport

The Bacolod-Silay Airport, known in Filipino as Paliparan ng Bacolod-Silay and in Hiligaynon as Hulugpaan sang Bacolod-Silay is the now the main airport serving the province of Negros Oriental and Negros del Norte, mostly used by the people living in Silay and the nearby Talisay and Bacolod Cities. In 2007, this bigger and more modern airport served as the replacement to the Bacolod City Domestic Airport, in Bacolod City, Philippines.

Located about 15 kilometers north of the main city in Negros Occidental, Bacolod City, the Bacolod-Silay Airport is situated in a small secluded part of a 181-hectare land surrounded by lush greeneries of mostly sugar-cane plantation and few bushes. This airport substituted the old airport in Bacolod in a vision to cater international flights and will be one of the 3 international airports in the Western Visayas region together with Kalibo International Airport in Aklan and the new International Airport in Iloilo.

Even though it was built to international standards, the Bacolod-Silay Airport was designated as a Principal Class 1 domestic airport by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines. Up to this writing, no commercial international flights have been handled by the airport yet.

The Bacolod-Silay Airport officially opened and began operations on January 18, 2008. Notably, its first commercial flight to arrive was Cebu Pacific’s Flight 5J 473 from Manila, an Airbus A319-100 which landed at 5:22am PST on the same day. Suitably enough, the pilot in command of the aircraft – Captain Allan Garces – was a native of Silay City. The first international flight to arrive at the airport was a chartered plane from Kazakhstan which landed, about a year later from its opening, on January 2, 2009.

The Bacolod-Silay Airport has one primary concrete runway which is 45 meters (148 ft) wide and 2,000 meters (6,600 ft) long, just a bit longer than its forerunners. It can handle planes as large as Airbus A330. Budget for the 500m expansion of the runaway has been approved by the Philippine Government in order to cater planes as big as the Boeing 747 and the Airbus A340.

The airport is furnished with an Instrument Landing System, making it capable of handling night and low-visibility landings.

In front of the airport complex, one can see the beautiful plants, trees, bushes and mountains as the backdrop.

Inside the complex, a visitor information desk and several roving policemen are ready to assist you. There are also free tourist information leaflets and brochures available inside.

The airport tax for a domestic flight is P200 and be sure to buy some food, snacks and beverages outside before going to the boarding lounge. The only available stores at the boarding lounge are coffee shops and a small spa center.

Near the airport’s main entrance gate, one can see and buy at Bong-bong’s Pasalubong Center. It is a souvenir shop which became famous of its Piaya (a flat unleavened bread filled with mozcovado (raw) sugar), but sells an array of items including the fiber glass Masskara, Bacolod shirts and a wide variety of Negrense delicacies.

At the moment, Airphil Express and Cebu Pacific serve Cebu, Manila to/from Silay while Philippine Airlines and Zest Airways serve Manila to/from Silay.

How to get there

From Bacolod, take a Bata-Libertad jeepney going to Robinsons (fare P7), from Robinsons you can either take the van directly to the airport (P100) or take a jeepney going to Silay (P15). In Silay, you can choose to take the van (P50) located near El Ideal Bakery, oldest bakery in Silay, or take the tricycle located in Silay public market going to the airport (P15 – with other passengers, P50 – solo).

  2. clyde says:

I’ve been traveling a lot this year(2013) and I’ve been in Bacolod-Silay Airport several times. I noticed that the waiting area of the airport smells like there is someone smoking cigarette. The waiting area is air conditioned but someone might be smoking there. I don’t know if the workers noticed it. I’m not a smoker that is why I can sense the smell of cigarette easily. For those several times I’ve been there the area really smells like cigarette.

I hope the management will look into this.

Yes! you are partly right! Rolly! I have a complaint too! thank you Mark! you are here to read our comments hopefully, you are in our side….that particular female security guard at the luggages scanning /x-ray machine is a mean person! she’s not suppose to work ther especially dealing with different passengers she doesn’t know who she’s dealing with( she is on duty last Nov.29, 2012 around 8am-afternoon) Here, in north america we never experienced a mistreat from our airport guards… they are strict but in a proper way. Will what do think genius Mark? I should make a complain to CAPP head Office but I think not necesessary right now will give her a chance to change her attitudes to all the passengers..hopefully?
