Camiguin Walkway: To Mount Vulcan and Stations of the Cross

The Camiguin Walkway is a series of steps going to Mount Vulcan, popularly known as the old volcano. The side of Mount Vulcan is Mount Hibok-hibok and both of these mountains are visible from White Island. Along the Camiguin Walkway path one will see the statues depicting the Stations of the Cross. This is one of the reasons why this place gets crowded during the Holy Week in time for the “Panaad” festival.

Camiguin Walkway is located in barangay Bonbon, town of Catarman, Camiguin, Philippines. It is very near the jurisdiction line of the town of Catarman. It is about 20-25 minutes from the town center of Mambajao and 5-10 minutes from the northern beaches such as Paras Beach Resort and Caves Dive Resort.

The stations of the cross is a devotion consisting of fourteen prayers said before a series of fourteen pictures or carvings representing successive incidents during Jesus’ passage from Pilate’s house to his crucifixion at Calvary. In Camiguin Walkway, locals and foreigners alike visit the place either for fun or penitence. Once you reach the topmost area, you will get to see the western area of Camiguin in the very pleasant form and will surely make you feel that your one hour hike going to the top is well worth it.

Since it is already over-crowded during the “Panaad” festival of the island, the Camiguin LGU’s decided to give the people an alternative to Camiguin Walkway during the Lenten Season. They decided to make another Stations of the Cross in the 64km long coastal road to give the locals the option for the ultimate sacrifice. “Panaad” is the local translation of “Commitment” which is their theme during this time of the year.

In Camiguin Walkway one has to pay the environmental fee of P5.00. The fee is only applicable to those who are above 12 years old. The fee is collected in the tourism and assistance counter located before the first station. Souvenir shops which sell shirts, bracelets, necklaces and key-chains are available across the street.
