St. Joseph Cathedral in Butuan

The Cathedral of St. Joseph is considered as one of the main churches in the historic city of Butuan in the Philippines; the other one is Sto. Niño Shrine located in Libertad. On May 19, 2009, Rev. Father Siegfred Dosdos read the Decree of Establishment of St. Joseph Cathedral as a Diocesan Shrine during Pontifical Fiesta Mass.

The declaration of the Saint Joseph Cathedral was approved by His Excellency Juan de Dios Mataflorida Pueblos, Catholic Bishop of Butuan and Parish Priest of the Cathedral.

Aside from the fact that the church in Butuan was the first church established in the Mindanao region, to many of the Roman Catholic devotees of Butuan City this is another achievement which they will pass to the next generation.

During that Pontifical Fiesta Mass, Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos handed over the cane of St. Joseph, which symbolizes the identification of Congressman Jose Aquino II and wife Salome as the new Hermano and Hermana Mayor of the Diocesan Shrine.

The First Easter Mass was celebrated in 1521, the Mission was founded by the Jesuits in 1596, the Blessing of the First church in Mindanao was in 1597, St. Joseph became the Titular Patron in 1622, St. Francis de Sales became the Second patron in 1792, the Blessing of the old parish church was in 1883, the consecration of the present church was in 1954, it was elevated to a cathedral by Pope Paul VI in 1967, it was appointed as church for the great jubilee in year 2000 and it became a dedicated cathedral as declared by Ricardo Cardinal Vidal in 2007.

Regarding on those Mary and Joseph altar, the side altar of the cathedral is not mary and joseph. It was St.Francis de Sales and St.Anne the mother of our lady. Please change it before others read it wrong. Thank you
